      Agreement on cooperation with Zhengzhou

      Lower Saxony’s state capital Hannover and Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province in China, have agreed on the joint development of economic and cultural cooperation.

      On 2 September Hannover’s Lord Mayor Stefan Schostok and Yunwei Xue, Deputy Mayor of Zhengzhou in Henan Province in China, signed a corresponding declaration of intent during the visit to the state capital of a delegation of high-ranking members of the provincial government. The background of the three-day visit in Lower Saxony lies in talks on building up the rail traffic from Zhengzhou to Europe, with, among other things, a freight transhipment location being sought in Hannover.

      "The enormous development of freight transport by rail between China and Europe is impressive. We too would like to play a part in this development; after all, Hannover is an attractive transport hub between the two areas. Against this background we are looking forward to a close economic and cultural exchange with the city of Zhengzhou“, said Lord Mayor Schostok at the reception for the Chinese delegation in Hannover’s New Town Hall.

      Zhengzhou is an important transport hub in central eastern China, an area with several hundred million inhabitants. The Asian-European rail link’s largest passenger and freight transhipment station as well as the biggest goods and marshalling yard in Asia are located in Zhengzhou. Rail transport between China and Europe has developed into an attractive alternative to air and sea freight in recent years.  

      Rail link between China and Europe

      September 2013 saw a rail link between China and Europe go into operation, operated by Zhengzhou Land Port of China and used by Hellmann Worldwide Logistics of Germany. The positive development of this rail link has given rise to plans to raise today’s frequency of one train per week to two in the future. In this connection, thoughts are being given on the Chinese side to using Hannover as a possible port of call (start/end point).

      Further destinations

      The schedule for the high-ranking delegation from China headed by Xie Fuzhan, the Governor of Henan Province, included a visit to Volkswagen AG and a reception hosted by Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil, with various contracts to be signed between German and Chinese companies.
