Leibniz University to be part of a wider ‘European University’

Leibniz University (LUH) is to receive 1.6 million euros from the European Union. It is being awarded this funding under the ‘European University’ initiative launched by the European Commission.

In 2020, Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) was the initiator of the ‘EULiST – European Universities Linking Society and Technology’ alliance. In conjunction with nine partners, it is now the recipient of funding under the European Commission-launched ‘European University’ initiative. This totals 14.3 million euros over a four-year period, of which 1.6 million euros is earmarked for LUH. Specifically, this money will be invested in subprojects covering a range of areas – quality education; affordable and clean energy; industry, innovation and infrastructure; sustainability and climate action – which reflect aspects of the United Nations Sustainability Goals.

EULiST alliance

LUH’s partners within the EULiST alliance are based in Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden. Specifically, and respectively, they are Vienna University of Technology, Brno University of Technology, Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, Institut Mines-Télécom, the National Technical University of Athens, Università degli Studi dell'Aquila, Slovak University of Technology Bratislava, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and Jönköping University.
EULiST’s goal is, by applying joint and integrative approaches to the social, natural and engineering sciences, to develop new and sustainable solutions addressing the major societal challenges of today and tomorrow. In order to achieve this, the aim is to develop tailored educational opportunities and an inter-university campus that cultivates ties between teaching staff, students and researchers while promoting mobility.

European Universities

It was in 2018 that the European Commission launched its ‘European Universities’ initiative with a view to changing institutional cooperation between higher-education establishments and elevating it to a new level. The aim is, within university networks, to encourage strategic partnerships between institutions of higher education throughout the EU. The objective is that ‘European Universities’ will emerge that, inter alia, enable students to earn a degree by combining studies in multiple EU countries.
